'm curious about the other side since you're talking about 2008. marco rubio and paul ryan spoke at this dinner. these are speeches where they're trying to define who they are. how would a rubio ryan stack up against clinton? it sort of feels like 2008 reversed except experience would come on the democratic side with hillary and youth might come from rubio or ryan on the republican side. >> clinton is a favorite among young people, especially young women. they're going to help determine future elections. i think paul ryan and marco rubio, they're trying to rebrand themselves and recast the republican party as a party of diversity and perhaps big ideas and a larger goal post. but i want to say this because i have to say this as vice chair of the party. as you know, the democratic party has a large and broad and deep base including vice president biden, who's done a terrific job in his capacity as the second in command, but also, we have governors. a lot of diversity. duval patrick and we can all look as governor cuomo, you have elizabeth warren that might be considered presidentia
. he has to be against the dream act. marco rubio was for privatizing social security. he's for all the same stuff that the american people over and over again have rejected ideawise, but he can put it in a nicer package. that's what jim demint has been trying to say. if you were back at your old job, rnc chair, you may be there again for all i know, how would you repair this thing? would you go to demint and his crowd moving to the outside to sort of build their sort of logger out there to fight the establishment or would you say, wait a minute, the future is dead center conservative. it's not fringy, it's not john birch, not going over -- >> i would remind them we're a center right party very much like the country -- >> i don't agree with that. >> the country is center right. >> they just voted for obama. >> center left. >> that's another show. we'll have that conversation. but the country is center right in large measure. >> we can't have another arithmetic system. >> this is not about the math. this is about the facts and the realities on the ground. >> the facts. the numbers. >
the other side since you're talking about 2008. marco rubio and paul ryan both spoke at this dinner and they were -- these were speeches where they're trying to define themselves as who they are. both probably going to run in 2016. how would a rubio/ryan stack up against a hillary clinton? in a sense it sort of feels like 2008 reversed, right, except for experience would come on the democratic side with hillary and the youth and this sort of idealism might perhaps come from a rubio or ryan on the republican side? >> well, if i look at that poll you were referring to, hillary clinton is the overwhelming favorite among young people, especially young women. young people and young women, clearly they're going to help determine future elections. look, i think paul ryan and marco rubio, are trying to rebrand themselves and recast the republican party as a party of diversity and, perhaps, big ideas and a larger goalpost. i want to also say this because i have to say this as vice chair of the party. as you know, the democratic party has a large and broad base, including vice president biden
's not what's in the box, it's the packaging. look what he did with marco rubio. a perfect study of what jim demint specializes. in you say to latinos, look at this guy. he's brown like you. but when he starts to speak, he has to say the same doctrine script and say party line. he has to be against the dream act. marco rubio was for privatizing social security. he's for all the same stuff that the american people over and over again have rejected ideawise but he can put it in a nicer package. that's what jim demint has been trying to say. >> how do you say self deportation in spanish? >> i don't think there's a term for it. >> i won't go there. but i think to joy's point and she makes a good one that i think the reality for the gop right now is it's no longer about the packaging. it really is about the substance -- >> it's a center right party back to your strong point. >> exactly. it's about the substance of the argument you have to make to the american people and we can disagree or agree on whether the country is center right or center left but the fact of the matter is we need to be where
a conservative movement, to get people involved in politics, like marco rubio, who jim helped early on in his primary i just think is going to be a great legacy. from a state point of view, we have lost one of our great champions. but he and debbie, jim and debbie have raised four wonderful children. they got great grandkids, and i knowim is looking forward to staying involved in pushing the conservative cause outside the body. he was an effective voice in the senate, whether you agreed with jim or not. he really did strongly and passionately advocate for his positions and did it very effectively. jim made the republican party, quite frankly, look inward and do some self-evaluation. conservatism is an asset, not a liability, as we try to govern this country in the 21st century. and i look forward to staying in touch with jim and to working with him at the heritage foundation to see what we can do to improve the fate of our country so we will not become greece. no one is more worried about this nation's unsustainable debt situation than senator demint. i've seen him deinvolve over time to some

is florida senator marco rubio giving the g.o.p. weekly address. >> we must get the national debt under control. tax increases will not solve our $16 trillion debt. only economic growth and reform and entitlement programs will help the debt. >> gregg: time is running out. they have to go into effect january 1st is a budget deal is not reached before then but going over the cliff will it be that bad and rein in the spending and protect our children's future. let's talk about it with jamie weinstein, senior editor of daily caller. first. i looked it up the third debate president obama boldly promised, i'll quote him, sequestration will not happen. couple days later in an interview he said, i'll wash john boehner's car and walk mitch mcconnell's dog to get a deal done. at this point, does it seem like empty promises? >> we don't know yet. certainly the type of negotiation would you expect is not happening. both sides have put out deals that were rejected from the other side. so we don't know where this is going, perhaps speaker boehner and the president have a secret deal they will put out
